American University police have tweeted that there are reports of an armed intruder near the campus.
They are advising students and staff to lock doors and stay away from windows.
Several people are waiting to be picked up their kids from a basketball camp on the campus. Some of the campers don't have cell phones, making communication tough, according to ABC7's Kevin Lewis.
The university continues to block access due to the lockdown. Lewis reports the Secret Service is now helping with the campus search.
Metropolitan Police and American University police are conducting a building-by-building search. Campus roads are currently closed.
University officials tweeted an investigation is focused on Main Campus, East Campus, and 3201 New Mexico. Shuttle operations have been shutdown as people continue to shelter in place.
If outside, they say to leave campus immediately.
D.C. police tell ABC 7 that they have a call for a "person with a gun on their hip" at Nebraska Avenue and New Mexico Avenue NW and that officers are responding, but no one has made contact yet.
This is a breaking story. More details will be added as they become available.
